  (Students must remain in classes until the completion of exams.  No early flights are allowed.  Canning Hall is closed during Christmas Break. Return flights must be scheduled so that students are in class on the first day of the second semester)
• January 7, 2024 - Christmas Break ends. Resident Hall opens @ 1:00 pm
• January 8, 2024 - First day of classes for the second semester
• March 7, 2024 - Spring Break begins @ 1:00 pm (Students must remain in classes until the completion of school. Canning Hall is closed during Spring Break.)
• March 17, 2024 - Spring Break ends Resident Hall opens @ 11:00 am
• March 27, 2024 - Easter Break begins @ 2:45 pm

• A blanket, bedspread or comforter and two fitted twin size bed sheets, two top sheets, two pillowcases and a pillow. Please put your name on each piece of bed linen.
• A desk lamp. (Halogen light bulbs are NOT permitted due to fire code regulations.)
• A clock radio and/or an alarm clock.
• An electric fan. (An air conditioner is NOT permitted).
• A six plug electrical strip, particularly if you have a fan, refrigerator, computer, desk lamp etc. going at the same time. (It must be a surge protector as extension cords are NOT permitted due to fire code).
• At least a week's worth of underwear, socks, school shirts and pants. Coin operated washers and dryers are available in the dorm for residents use. Bring your own laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc.
• Pajamas, towels, wash cloths, slippers and robe.
• A suit or sport coat (dark blue seems popular at present), dress pants, dress shirts and dress shoes. Ties are also necessary for special occasions.
• Coats, jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves and shoes that are appropriate for the various seasons. St. Louis has a warm end of the summer; a cool fall; a cold sometimes-snowy winter; and a warm, wet, and humid spring.
• Indoor and outdoor recreational clothing and shoes.
• Hobby and entertainment equipment such as stereos, tapes/CD equipment, musical instruments, personal sports equipment like baseball glove, soccer ball, tennis racket, golf clubs, football, etc.
• Posters and pictures that can be attached to the walls with masking tape, a carpet or throw rugs, small furniture and plants that give the room a personal touch.
• A telephone for the resident student’s room should he choose to pay for service while residing in the dorm. The student and/or his parents/guardians are responsible for paying the monthly phone bill.
• A phone card for long distance phone calls. Calls should be billed to your home.
• All safety equipment is required for skateboarding, roller-blading, and bicycle riding.

 

A number of resident students have a small refrigerator. This can be useful though it is not absolutely essential. School supplies can be purchased at the school bookstore or locally

English enrichment for new international students

Chaminade offers numerous English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for all new international students. The purpose of the courses is to help our new students with their verbal, reading, listening and speaking skills.

 

All new international students (middle school and high school) take the Macaulitis English Assessment Tool when they first arrive at Chaminade. Based on these scores, we will place a student into our lower-level ESL language course or our upper-level ESL language course. Students who begin in the lower-level course will take two years of ESL language classes while students who start with the upper-level ESL language class can choose from Chinese, French, Latin or Spanish as their language in future years.

 

In addition, first year high school international students will take an ESL theology/religion course, an ESL writing/ composition class and an ESL history/social studies course geared just for new international students. These courses will help our new students feel more comfortable in our academic environment while gaining valuable English skills. International students in their second year of high school at Chaminade will take most of the same courses that our American students do.

 

The ESL courses are designed to meet the needs of a diverse international population. The courses assist the student by improving his ability to produce accurate and understandable English in the classroom. Materials from the student's core academic subjects are used to expand his vocabulary. American culture is also featured in the classes.

• Be sure to schedule your flights to and from St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The airport code is “STL.”
• Please email Mr. Chrismer your flight information no later than a week before the flight so that he can arrange transportation to/from the airport.
• NOTE: MANY U.S. AIRLINES REQUIRE “UNACCOMPANIED MINOR” SERVICE FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14. Unaccompanied minor service requires that you provide the names of the adult dropping the child off at the gate for departure and the name of the adult picking the child up at the gate when he arrives. The cost for this service is generally $150 each way and is REQUIRED by American Airlines, Delta Airlines and Frontier Airlines. United Airlines requires this service for children under 15 year of age and Southwest Airlines requires the service for students under the age of 11.
• The guidelines below should be followed when scheduling flights at the beginning of the school year, Christmas break, Spring break and the end of the school year. No exceptions will be allowed.

Scheduling flights for the 2023-2024 school year:

Start of the school year, 2023:

New students should arrive on campus on Sunday, August 6, 2023.

Returning students should arrive Sunday, August 13, 2023.

 

Start of Christmas Break:
Flights must be scheduled for any time after 2:00 p.m. (14:00) on Tuesday, December 19 but before 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2023

 

Return from Christmas Break:
Flights must be scheduled so that your son is back on campus after 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

 

Start of Spring Break:
Flights must be scheduled for any time after 3:00 p.m. (15:00) on Thursday, March 7 but before 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024.

 

Return from Spring Break:
Flights must be scheduled so that your son is back on campus after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

 

End of the Year:
Flights must be scheduled for any time after 2:00 p.m. (14:00) on Thursday, May 23 but before 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024.

August Entry:

There is a mandatory orientation program for all new students. The program begins with a welcome dinner for the new students, their parents and siblings. The orientation program starts the following day at 8:00 a.m. and continues for the next ten days. During that time, the young men will take a tour of campus, take a math placement test, create their schedules, get tutorials on the proper use of the laptop, meet various school personnel and receive ESL instruction.

 

Evenings are spent at cultural and social venues around the St. Louis area including theaters, museums and amusement parks. As this is part of the orientation program, students are required to participate in these activities.

 

Parents: There is a new parent orientation from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Monday following the move-in day. The orientation begins with breakfast and includes a campus tour, presentations from the Business Office, nurse and technology coordinator, and ends with lunch with your son.

 

January Entry:

There is a mandatory two-day orientation program for any January entry students. This abbreviated orientation program will include most of the aspects described above for August entry but will not include the evening cultural events. Students are expected to attend this program from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on the two days following the Spring semester move-in day.
